Consulting in strategy development and evaluation.

My strategic consulting produces effective, measurable and results-based strategies for public health. I have been designing strategies in the area of health communication, reproductive health and HIV prevention for over 10 years. Clients include some of the most prominent organisations in the field. I aim to bring coherent, fundable and measurable strategies to even the most complex of public health problems.

Evaluation is at the heart of most public health strategy, and is integral to a programme’s growth and funding. As a trained researcher and medical anthropologist, I can conduct evaluations in a range of qualitative formats, or work alongside statisticians within more quantitative approaches. My evaluation clients range from major international institutions to minor community programmes.

Thomas Scalway, consultant

My work synthesizes a variety of research and strategy design methods that aim to deliver and gauge progress toward even the most complex of pubic health outcomes.

How I work

I am a consultant living between Cape Town and Geneva. I work individually, or if needed, as part of a broader team. Running my small consulting firm, Scalway Consulting, I have contracted associates from many countries to help respond to jobs where a broad range of expertise, increased scale or speed is paramount. A team of 4-6 is typically in operation on any one of our larger assignments. Clients contract me directly, or through larger consulting firms such as the UNAIDS Technical Support Facility (TSF).

May 2012

I am currently working with UNFPA on a strategy development exercise, helping to define the agency's work on youth in Africa. This has involved extensive use of a range of participatory exercises, desk-research and interactive visual tools. Scalway Consulting commissioned graphic designers in Colombia, editorial assistants in South Africa, and research assistants in US and Spain in order to get a large assignment complete within the agreed time-frame.
